My first month in Germany was a bit 2020. haha. You know unexpected, full of surprises and then when you look back your like WOW. We planned to move to Germany in December 2019 and there has been some unexpected surprises, but overall the picture below describes the magic! You can find out why were are in Germany here.
In this blog post, I will talk about what it has been like for me in the first month and some advice if you are looking to move abroad.
Like wow right? It snowed on the Sunday before the New Year and we went to the forest first thing in the morning! As we walk around the pretty snow, we chatted about our plans. This was the second day we went out for an adventure. The first time was right before the lockdown happened. The first piece of advice I have it to take EVERY opportunity to explore when you can.
First Holiday in Germany
Our first holiday in Germany was chill. It was probably the most chill Christmas and New Years I have had my whole life. I grew up in a big family so on any given holiday there were 30 to 50 people. ahaha so having just us two was different but we made the best of it! We enjoyed our annual steak dinner for Christmas Eve and joined my BIL & SIL for my first raclette experience. We laughed and chatted and enjoyed cheese. If you know me then you know that cheese and wine are the way to my heart! We will definitely be having more raclette nights.
Luggage chronicles
My suitcases arrived and only one lost the top. All my clothing, which I really downsized. Honestly, if you are planning on moving plan ahead and start selling, donating, etc at least 6 months before if you have a walk in closet. I gave away 6 bags of clothing and so many things. I wish I would have started packing up months ago. I did move a 3 bedroom house in six samsonite suitcases.
Our Home in Germany
I promise to get some pictures once everything is prim and proper. We are in one of the apartments we own and its been fun to decorate and make the place ours. We ordered all our things, but then our two chairs changed the estimated 2 weeks to 18 weeks… Like WOAHHH. So we canceled and hopefully we will find something in exchange. We are going for a boho chic room, so I’ll have to get a vote on if I was successful.
Speaking German
My current favorite words are sorry (entschuldigung), hello (hallo), & thank you (danke). I have two more days to find a german school because one of my goals is to become fluent and find a school the first week in January. So here goes nothing!
Restrictions in Germany
So the lockdown here is about to have more changes. Since Christmas week, all stores except the grocery store have been closed. This is why the grocery has become one of our favorite places. The new restrictions start January 11th, 2020:
- The 8pm curfew is in full effect
- You can only have one visitor
- Schools are closed
- All non essential businesses (shopping, furniture shops, waxing, etc)
- Businesses are trying to find ways to create more work from home situations.
At the end of the day,
I will definitely keep you updated. I hope you are doing well & staying healthy!
