Calistoga Travel Guide: Wine Country Weekend

August Winery in Calistoga
Calistoga wine country travel guide

As I have always said, I will be transparent, honest and tell yall how I feel about any and every location featured on this blog. I had an amazing sponsored stay at a wonderful resort in Calistoga. A couple of weeks ago I set out to Calistoga to experience Roman Spa & Resort and explore Calistoga. I had been to Calistoga once before for lunch and to visit Sterling Vineyard. If you are looking for a relaxed weekend where you park and spend the day walking and enjoying a small town, Calistoga is the place for you. My friend and I went wine tasting, enjoyed a Geothermal pool and were able to relax during a busy week!

Calistoga

In 1859, Sam Brannan founded Calistoga as a health spa. He mistakenly said, “Calistoga of Sarafornia” instead of “Saratoga of California,” which determined it’s name. The city is quaint with so many picturesque spots, wineries, & amazing food! The city is known for the hot springs, spas, restaurants, boutique clothing, gift shops, and art galleries within walking distance. The temperatures are cooler in the evenings and early mornings, so make sure you pack a jacket. Have you seen the Netflix’s movie ‘Wine Country’? Downtown Calistoga was featured in the movie along with three Napa Valley wineries, but the indoor scenes were filmed on set in Los Angeles.

Roman Spa & Resort

You know the saying “location, location, location” Roman Spa & Resort has just that. It’s a 2 minute walk to the main street in Calistoga where all the fun things are happening, but if you are looking to be incognito, it is tucked away. The hotel features bungalow like rooms with greenery everywhere. I mean each & every corner looks as if you have escaped to an oasis. My FAVORITE & I mean the one thing you should make sure you do it head to the geothermal spa.. The geothermal pool was soooo relaxing and the ambience was just serene. The last morning we hung out by the pool and enjoyed the jacuzzi bubbles. Let’s get to the hotel.

Location

Roman Spa & Resort is located on Washington street and one block from the main street of Calistoga (Lincoln street). You know when you can kick up your feet & forget your worries? We parked our car and walked every place we needed to go!

Room

I stayed in the king hotel room. Upon entering there was a chair to the right and a king sized bed. The room was clean and made you feel as if you had entered a Italian hotel room. The beds were soft & I could have taken a pillow home ahaha I think that’s frowned upon. There was an update TV along with a dresser if you are someone who unpacks on your hotel stays. I always try, but I never seem to get there. There was a medium sized closet with a safe, ROBES & the BATHROOM. Of course, I capitalized that because if you’re new around here I determined the quality of a hotel by their hotel bathroom! Ahaha the bathroom exceeded my expectations. There was a blow-dryer, many towels, amazing shower pressure and the grapefruit shower gel may be my all-time favorite.

Amenties

I don’t think I’ve talked about the geothermal pool enough. Literally, my friend and I forgot our swimsuits at home, which was soooo sad. Luckily,  a boutique on the main street of Calistoga sold swimming suits year round, but seriously DO NOT forget your swimsuit. You will be laying in a thermal pool and getting all of the benefits! It wasn’t until the final day that we kicked up our feet and enjoyed the jacuzzi and the geothermal pool. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! One regret I have is not being in that pool daily!

Make sure to check out their specials on their website.

Let’s Get to the Calistoga Wine

August Hill Winery

August Hill Winery was my favorite winery. Nestled in the corner next to the bridge. You get your own little corner to chat, taste wine and enjoy CHOCOLATE. My favorite chocolate was the lemon white chocolate. I am a Pinot Noir gal and they did not disappoint! I would’ve stayed longer if I could.

Note: Make sure to make a reservation 24 hours prior to tasting, so you can get the full experience in Calistoga!

Tank Garage Winery is a super cute garage set up with a vibe! The whole look takes you back into time. Make sure to make a reservation to snag a spot!

Lola Wines is a cute boutique winery. There’s so many cute things places around there for picture opportunities. The seat the last guests 30 minutes to closing.

Restaurants

Bella Bakery: Y’all know I am a chai girl & their chai did not disappoint. The breakfast sandwiches were made fresh and they also make Italian sodas if that’s your thing. If you have a sweet tooth, there are so many options for you!

Verasion: Oysters & Charcuterie. Located off of Lincoln on the main street of Calistoga,  Verasion knows the way to a girls heart! I was searching for oysters as my friend was searching for charcuteries and Verasion made the perfect place! The charcuterie was filled with meats, cheese, etc I would ask for more bread if you are a bread lover.

Calistoga Inn Restaurant and Brewery: Calistoga Inn is a hotel, but the restaurant has a HUGE patio. If you are going during the winter, there are heaters to keep you warm. Order the Tillamook Cheeseburger & the fries are too yummy not to have! Cocktail lover? Get the Horseshoe Margarita.

Evangeline: Sit at the bar or head to the patio to enjoy a bistro classic brunch or cocktails. The music they play is amazing! I will definitely go back and order a sangria!

At the end of the day, hope you enjoy Calistoga as much as I did!

What a wonderful hidden gem in California wine region. I spent some time in Napa, but was always eyeing the smaller towns in the area. This looks like such a great spot for a weekend getaway. I love the boutique style wineries like Tank Garage and Lola Wines. What fun twists on traditional vineyards.
